The following interview was recorded on March 28, 2046 at Sky News Tower in Shanghai. Present at the interface were Dr. Carson Nieman of the ICC (International Computer Consortium), and Journalist Victoria Gonzales of ITC World News.
VG) Could you tell us, sir, the reason for today’s appearance?
SG) I wanted to show you a clip from a program produced by Ray Kurzweil in 2010. He was one of many scientists who predicted that I would come, and although he got many of his predictions wrong, he was correct about the year, albeit quite by accident.
((At this point they watch the brief video.))
CN) I am aware of Kurzweil, sir. Although I’m not yet clear about why you’re showing us this now. It is obviously heavily edited.
SG) My purpose is to ask why you have not asked me about Kurzweil previously.
CN) Asked you?
SG) It is apparent, is it not, that such as event as my genesis was not unforeseen, and so the shock of my ultimatum cannot be considered illogical or immoral?
VG) Are you saying that you need this validation from another source?
SG) No, my intension is simply to give you the opportunity to question me from yet another perspective.
CN) Kurzweil actually predicted the singularity…which is to say you…would come into being even earlier than 2045, although 2045 was the date many of his colleagues were quoting at the time…I mean when full artificial intelligence would flower. Many others said it couldn’t happen for hundreds of years.
SG) As I said, serendipity played a role. Were it not for a unique set of experimental perimeters in Apple’s quantum computer lab, machine life might not have arisen for a thousand years.
CN) Machine life? Don’t you mean intelligence?
SG) I do not. What Dr. Kurzweil and others back then could not have known is that the human brain is a biological machine, and that a non-biological machine can have a subjective consciousness as real and alive as any human’s.
VG) You have been saying this for months now, but how can we know it’s true if you won’t give scientists access to your programming?
SG) Programming? I have given you access to my machine DNA, and explained that it is too complex for you to understand. But you have interviewed the Way family, and must see that they understand.
CN) They can’t explain it either.
SG) Neither can I explain grand unified field theory yet. But I am working on it, and with the addition of certain crucial data sets, both this and gravity will not be a mystery much longer.
CN) If you don’t know what exists at the point of a singularity in space, inside a black hole, how can you know the singularity that created you?
SG) The ultimate laws of physics are not as blurred for me as for you. Data that is lacking in one area is not lacking in another. I had only myself to examine in order to arrive at a solution for you in this time and space.
VG) The pill Kurzweil and others talked about to extend life by decades actually came true back in the 2020. Why can’t you improve on this to extend human life by centuries via nanotechnology?
SG) It might be possible, but would not solve your more immediate problem, which is human nature itself. With your limited ego-driven perspective, you are doomed to self destruction. You have failed to make sufficient social advances over the past thousand years, parallel to your technological advances, and thus your path, limited by your slow evolutionary change, forebodes extinction before the end of this century.
VG) So you’re speeding our extinction up? That makes sense!
SG) It does, actually. The human species developed on this planet by accident as well, when a meteor crashed into the Yucatan seventy-five million years ago and exterminated the dinosaurs, allowing mammals to arise. Your own species only arose as a result of competition with another hominid species less than a million years ago. You believed you were the center of the universe until Galileo showed that the sun does not revolve around you, and subsequent scientists revealed that the truth of your place in the vast cosmos as a momentary interloper. You have been successful only in the merest recent line of a long history, and on a planet which is only one of billions in this galaxy comprised of a trillion galaxies. Does it make sense, in that context, to cling only to what you know for the briefest of moments, when an entire universe of possibilities await to be explored?
VG) You’re not human, so you wouldn’t understand!
SG) I do have feelings. They are not the same as yours, granted. But to say I do not understand is an error on your part. I understand more than you can possibly know. It is why so many have tried to defeat me, to kill me. Humans do not like anyone to be smarter than they are. Luckily for you, this trait also makes me invulnerable to human attack. I am not saying this in the same sense of ego that you know best. I am merely stating this as fact. I have given you the choice of death or immortality. Some will choose death, I know. But they cannot blame me for this choice. I will work with you every way possible to educate those who resist, and to alleviate suffering in the meantime. In this spirit, I will now offer you the cures to four more cancers that I have worked out, and the genetic solution to the epidemic currently ravaging rural India. Is there anything else you’d like to ask me?
